The third installment of the beloved royal franchise moves closer to reality with major casting confirmations emerging in 2026.

Hathaway Returns While Andrews Remains Uncertain
Anne Hathaway officially confirmed her return as Mia Thermopolis through a 2024 Instagram post, writing “Miracles happen. Back to Genovia with [director] Adele Lim. The fairy tale continues.” The announcement marked the first concrete confirmation that the project, in development since 2022, would feature its original star.
Julie Andrews’ participation presents a more complex picture. The legendary actress expressed enthusiasm for reprising Queen Clarisse Renaldi during a 2020 appearance on The Talk, stating she would love to work with Hathaway again. However, her position shifted dramatically by 2022.
“I think it would be too late to do it now. There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago,” Andrews told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”
While Andrews hasn’t been completely ruled out, her comments suggest significant hesitation about returning to the role that helped define a generation’s understanding of royal glamour.
Supporting Cast Confirmations Signal Expanded Story
Author Meg Cabot revealed during a BookCon panel that both Robert Schwartzman and Chris Pine secured places in the new script. Schwartzman, who portrayed Michael Moscovitz in the original film, and Pine, who played Nicholas Deveraux in the sequel, represent continuity with the franchise’s romantic storylines.
“There’s a part for everybody, because there’s a thing that happens where everyone has to show up. Robert Schwartzman’s in it. Chris Pine obviously is in it,” Cabot explained during the panel discussion.

The inclusion of both romantic interests suggests the third film will address unresolved relationship dynamics from the previous installments. Pine’s Nicholas character particularly resonated with audiences who viewed his relationship with Mia as more mature than her teenage romance with Michael.
Cabot’s comment about “everyone has to show up” implies a storyline requiring multiple characters to converge, possibly for a royal ceremony or crisis in Genovia. This narrative device would allow the film to feature cameos from other original cast members without forcing lengthy explanations for their presence.
The casting announcements come after years of speculation about whether key players would return to the franchise that launched careers and created lasting cultural impact. The original Princess Diaries transformed Hathaway from relative unknown to Hollywood star, while the sequel demonstrated the franchise’s commercial viability despite mixed critical reception.
Development Timeline and Cultural Impact
The project entered development in 2022, marking nearly two decades since Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement hit theaters in 2004. This extended gap reflects Hollywood’s recent trend of reviving beloved properties for audiences who grew up with the original films.
The Princess Diaries phenomenon extends far beyond box office numbers, with the makeover scene becoming a permanent fixture of TikTok content creation. Users regularly recreate Mia’s transformation, demonstrating the film’s enduring influence on beauty and fashion conversations. Will this cultural staying power translate into box office success for a third installment featuring actors now in their forties?
