Whether you’re dealing with the consequences of improperly applied lash extensions or you’re struggling to glue falsies that simply won’t stick, there always seems to be some sort of hurdle in the race toward long lashes. If you’re feeling discouraged by what can often feel like a grueling process, don’t worry, we’ve been there too! And because we resonate with your frustration, we would like to offer some assistance by pointing you in a new direction. Perhaps it’s time for you to consider a lash lift.

A lash lift is a perm that is meant to enhance your eyelashes by providing a natural-looking lift and curl that can last for weeks on end. Once we heard about this long-term alternative that requires less maintenance, we had to do some digging. We consulted lash artist Paula Ocot from tattoo studio Laurel NYC to break down everything you need to know about getting a lash lift. Keep reading, because we might have just made your beauty routine a whole lot easier. You’re welcome.

What is a lash lift?

“A lash lift is essentially a perm for your lashes that offers eye-popping results by creating a natural curl and lift to your lashes,” says Ocot. She also explains that everyone has different lash lengths and growth directions, some lashes grow in downward direction while others grow straight out. “The lash lift process creates a natural eye-opening lash swoop that lasts for several weeks,” adds Ocot.

We also want to mention that because chemicals are involved in the perming process, it’s crucial to select a licensed professional that uses safely formulated solutions.

What sort of preparation is required before a lash lift treatment?

One of the best parts about the lash treatment process is that there’s barely any preparation involved. Simply arrive at your appointment au natural. To ensure that your face is completely makeup-free, Ocot suggests avoiding eye makeup a few days prior to the treatment. “If you wear mascara on the regular, specifically waterproof mascara, it’s recommended to stop use for at least three days prior to your appointment as it can leave a residue that prevents lashes from adhering to the adhesive,” she adds.

What should you expect after receiving a lash lift?

Get ready for lots of compliments. “A lash lift will enhance your eyes by making them look more open and awake,” says Ocot. Ocot also shares that clients can ask their artist to tint their lashes after they’re lifted, for darker and thicker looking lashes. “Be ready to say goodbye to your mascara and lash curler, and shave some time off of your beauty routine.”

What are the steps of a lash lift?

First, you should have an idea of your desired lash style and make sure to express this during your consultation. “Every lash lift service starts off with a consultation,” says Ocot. “During this consultation, your artist will ask for your desired results and assess your natural lashes and eye shape.” Ocot explains that some people prefer a soft and natural lash curl, while others would rather have a tighter lash curl for a more dramatic look. “Your artist can alter the ‘tightness’ of your lash curl and add a tint to make the lashes look darker and thicker,” adds Ocot. Based on how you would like your lashes to be customized, your artist will then select the appropriately sized silicone curling rod to shape, lift, and curl your lashes.

Then, sit back, close your eyes, and relax for about 45 minutes. “Your artist will begin by thoroughly cleaning the eye area,” Ocot explains. “Once the eyes are cleaned off of any residual makeup and oils, a silicone curling rod is placed with a gentle adhesive on the eyelids bordering the lash line. The natural lashes are then curled over top of the rod and set with an adhesive.”

Note that your eyes will be closed throughout the entire session, so if closing your eyes for extended periods of time makes you uneasy, try listening to a podcast or music. “Once the artist ensures that all lashes are combed up and separated in place, a lifting lotion is applied to the lashes,” Ocot adds. The lifting lotion is intended to mold the lashes to the shape of the curling rod. “Following this, a setting lotion is applied which sets the lash shape into place.” And after the setting lotion, Ocot explains that there is one last step. “Finally, a nourishing lotion is added to add moisture back into the lashes.”

How much does a lash lift cost?

Lash lifts typically cost between $100 and $120 per session. Pricing depends on which salon you go to, but the treatment is generally more affordable than lash extensions.

How long do results usually last?

A lash lift will typically last about 6-8 weeks. Of course, this all depends on how you take care of your lashes. Although the upkeep required is very low-maintenance, it’s still essential that you properly tend to your lashes.

What sort of upkeep is required?

The first 24 hours are crucial. “Keep your lash lift dry. No water, sweat (no heavy exercising), steam or sauna for the first 24 hours,” Ocot advises. You’ll also want to make sure that you’re not excessively touching your eye lashes. “Try not to rub your eyes too much as you can alter the curl with excessive rubbing of the eye,” Ocot adds. Ocot also recommends using a clean spoolie to brush your lashes daily, to keep them airy, fluffy, separated, and tangle-free.

As for makeup, you can wear eye makeup and mascara but avoid waterproof formulas. “If you want to enhance your lift, sticking to water-based mascaras is the best option,” Ocot says. Water-proof eye makeup can weaken the effect of your lift and leave a residue. To remove your makeup, make sure to only use oil-free makeup removers and cleansers.

Lastly, Ocot suggests nourishing your lashes two to three times a week with castor oil to strengthen and rejuvenate your eyelash hairs. At night before bed, use a cotton swab to spread a drop or two of castor oil along the top of your eyelashes, while making sure to avoid direct contact with your eyes. In the morning, you can gently wash the oil off with warm water, and voila, you’re all set.
